Scooter Inner Tube 8.5" (Schrader valve)

Origin

Bicycle BMX tubes adapted for the e-scooter form factor — 8.5" is a non-standard size in cycling but became a de-facto standard once Xiaomi M365 hit volume. No single design team — commodity product. Xiaomi spec'd Kenda/CST as OEM; aftermarket suppliers reverse-engineered fitment. 8.5 inches is the practical sweet spot for portable e-scooters: smaller than a 12" wheel (still too clunky to fold compactly), larger than the 6.5" hoverboard wheel (which rides terribly on real surfaces). 8.5" with a 2.0" tire section gives just enough rubber to absorb cobblestone shock without making the scooter too heavy or expensive.

The verdict

+Strengths
  • Schrader valve compatible with any gas station air pump — free inflation anywhere in the Baltic
  • Ubiquitous availability — every cycling shop and most electronics retailers stock 8.5" tubes
  • Cheap — €3-7 for standard tube means keeping 2 spares at home is trivial
  • Easy to replace — 15-20 minutes including wheel removal even for a first-timer with tire levers
  • Schrader core is replaceable separately — leaky valve does not require new tube
  • Anti-puncture variant nearly eliminates the most common pinch-flat scenario on Baltic cobblestones
  • Slime-filled variant gives set-and-forget reliability for casual riders or fleet operators
  • Works across the entire Xiaomi family + most Chinese 8.5" clones — single SKU covers most of the Baltic e-scooter installed base
Weaknesses
  • Standard butyl tube punctures very easily on cobblestones — most riders puncture within 300-500km
  • Schrader valve is heavier and bulkier than Presta — irrelevant for urban scooter use but worth noting
  • Rear wheel of M365 is a multi-hour DIY job to disassemble (motor cable, brake disc, hub bolt) — many riders take it to a shop, adding €10-20 labour to a €5 tube
  • Anti-puncture tubes add 80-130g per wheel — small range reduction (~2-3%) and slightly heavier ride feel
  • Slime sealant dries out in ~2 years even without punctures — must replace tube on schedule, not just on failure
  • Slime does not seal cuts >3mm, sidewall damage, or pinch flats (snake bites that punch two holes simultaneously)
  • Cheap no-name tubes from AliExpress sometimes have factory defects (valve seating leaks, weak rubber) — €2-3 saving rarely worth it
  • Bent-valve (90 degree) variant adds €2-3 cost and is harder to find — most shops stock only straight Schrader
