36V Scooter Controller (15-25A)

Origin

Aftermarket replacement for Xiaomi M365 stock controller — same form factor, similar specs, ~€30-50 vs Xiaomi's ~€80-100 for genuine spare Multiple — Hanjie (Wuxi) and Yongdong (Shenzhen) are the two most-named OEMs, but dozens of Shenzhen PCB houses produce essentially identical boards under no-name labels Genuine Xiaomi M365 spare controller (much more expensive, harder to source in EU) Genuine Xiaomi spares (still ~2x price), branded upgrade boards from ScooterHacking ecosystem, FOC sine-wave from Yongdong, premium options from Lingbo and TFN

The verdict

+Strengths
  • Cheap — €30-50 for a square-wave board, half the price of genuine Xiaomi spares
  • Drop-in compatibility with M365 / 1S / Pro / Pro 2 form factor and connector set
  • Sine-wave FOC variant gives genuinely smoother motor and quieter ride for €55-90
  • Programmable via UART for owners willing to unlock speed limiter or tune throttle curve
  • Wide aftermarket support — ScooterHacking community has documented every common board
  • Replaceable in 30-45 minutes by a competent DIYer with basic tools (Phillips screwdriver, hex keys, multimeter)
  • Improves on stock in many cases — aftermarket boards often run cooler than stock M365 controller
  • Conformal-coated variants resist water ingress dramatically better than stock
Weaknesses
  • No brand accountability — buying from AliExpress means no warranty, no traceable manufacturer, no consistent quality batch-to-batch
  • MOSFET burnout failure mode is common on cheap boards under sustained high-current use (heavy rider + long hill = dead board)
  • Capacitor death after 3-5 years is essentially guaranteed without preventive replacement
  • Connector pinout varies between manufacturers — wrong pinout can destroy the new board within seconds
  • Voltage mismatch (36V vs 48V) is unforgiving — single most expensive buyer mistake
  • Uncoated boards die fast in wet Baltic climate — water ingress is a major real-world failure mode
  • Cheap thumb-throttles can fool the board's idle detection causing pulsing at standstill
  • Locked / 25 km/h limited mode is the default — unlocking requires external app and is legally grey-area
