Origin

The Multicharger2 is the second generation of Riese & Müller's longtail cargo e-bike, launched in 2023 by the German premium manufacturer founded in Darmstadt. It was designed to bridge the gap between a compact daily e-bike and a full cargo bike: at roughly 200 cm long with 26" wheels, it hauls children, passengers and loads (175 kg gross vehicle weight) while still handling like a normal e-bike and fitting in a typical garage. The gen-2 redesign brought the Bosch Smart System, a 750 Wh PowerTube battery and a wide range of drivetrain options to suit families and adventurers alike.

The verdict

+Strengths
  • Exceptional German build quality — overbuilt, stiff frame with reinforcement gussets, bolted battery covers and durable componentry
  • Powerful, responsive Bosch Performance Line CX motor (85 Nm) that pulls heavy loads confidently
  • Long real-world range from the 750 Wh battery, extendable with a 250 Wh range extender
  • Very versatile longtail — carries passengers or cargo (175 kg GVWR) yet handles close to a normal e-bike
  • Compact for a cargo bike (26" wheels, ~200 cm) so it fits in normal garages and storage
Weaknesses
  • Heavy at ~30-31 kg, making it awkward to lift, transport or maneuver when unpowered
  • Premium price (from ~$7,900 to $9,000+) with accessories adding significant cost
  • Long 8-10 week build/delivery lead time from Germany
  • Bosch CX motor produces a noticeable whine at high power / high RPM
  • Suspension seatpost raises minimum saddle height and charge-port placement near the crank arm is awkward to reach
