The Charger is one of Riese & Müller's longest-running trekking/commuter platforms, and the Charger4 (launched 2023) is the fourth generation, redesigned around the Bosch Smart System with a fully integrated PowerTube battery. Built by the German premium maker in Darmstadt, it positions itself as a do-everything 'SUV e-bike' for daily commuting and long-distance touring, offered in derailleur, Enviolo CVT, automatic, and Rohloff drivetrains plus a 45 km/h S-pedelec HS version.

The verdict

+Strengths
  • Excellent, harmonious Bosch Performance Line CX drive with 85 Nm and near-instant, natural engagement
  • Outstanding German build quality — clean internal cable routing, exemplary welds, premium finish
  • Comfortable touring ride thanks to 100 mm fork plus suspension seatpost
  • Very good real-world range (~100 km tested even in Turbo, expandable via DualBattery)
  • Fully equipped out of the box: integrated lights, racks (MIK, 27 kg), mudguards, plus four drivetrain choices
Weaknesses
  • Very expensive — around £5,139 / $6,700–$10,000+ depending on variant
  • Heavy and bulky at ~27.5–30 kg, awkward to lift or carry up stairs
  • Brake lever reach and oversized grips are uncomfortable for riders with smaller hands
  • Base Purion 100 display feels under-spec for the price point (Kiox costs extra)
  • Large minimum frame size and tall standover may deter shorter riders (Mixte low-step helps)
