01Hope Technology was founded in 1989 by Ian Weatherill (still actively leading R&D) and Simon Sharp in a small garage in Barnoldswick, Lancashire — the same Pennine town where Rolls-Royce built Merlin engines during WWII. The factory has grown to over 80 CNC machines but remains in the same town, employing ~150 people directly.
02Every Tech 4 V4 caliper is CNC-machined from a solid block of 2014 T6 aluminium — the entire caliper body, internal channels, and threaded ports are cut from billet. No castings, no forgings, no composites. A single caliper takes ~45 minutes of CNC time including multiple setups. This is the most expensive way to manufacture a brake caliper and is fundamentally why Hope brakes cost 2-3x what Magura or Shimano charge.
03Hope brakes are designed to be serviced indefinitely — every component including pistons, seals, master cylinder rebuild kits, and even hose fittings is available as a spare for decades back. Hope still supplies parts for the Mono Mini brake from 1996. This 'lifetime serviceability' is core to the brand's identity and is unique in the cycling brake market.
04Hope offers Tech 4 V4 in seven standard anodized colours — Red, Blue, Black, Silver, Purple, Orange, Bronze — plus limited-edition seasonal colours (recent: Steel Blue, Khaki Green, Champagne). This colour matching extends across the full Hope product range (hubs, headsets, stems, handlebar caps) meaning riders often build entire component packages in coordinated anodized finishes.
05DOT 5.1 (Hope's chosen fluid) has a higher boiling point than DOT 4 — ~270°C dry vs ~230°C dry — making it the technically correct choice for gravity riding with sustained heat. It is hygroscopic (absorbs water from the atmosphere over time, lowering its wet boiling point) but Hope's bleed system is designed to handle annual fluid changes cleanly. DOT 5 (without the .1) is silicone-based and INCOMPATIBLE — must never be used in Hope brakes despite the similar name.
06The Tech 4 lever (introduced 2022) was Hope's first major lever redesign in 13 years. The cam profile was completely redrawn to provide a claimed 30% more power for the same hand input, and the master cylinder bore reduced to match. The result is a brake that requires noticeably less finger force at the lever for the same braking effort — particularly relevant on long descents where finger fatigue is a real factor.
07Hope's two-piece floating rotor design — stainless friction track riveted to an aluminium spider — improves heat dissipation versus one-piece steel rotors and resists the heat warping that plagues some Shimano Ice Tech rotors under sustained DH use. The rivets allow the friction track to expand and contract independently of the spider, reducing distortion.
08Despite the boutique premium pricing, Hope brakes are widely used by EWS/EDR enduro racing teams and have a long association with downhill — they were OEM on early Orange Five and Five Plus DH bikes and are still favoured by privateer racers who can rebuild their own brakes between rounds.
09Hope Technology produces around 1,400 frames per year of their HB.916 enduro and HB.130 trail bikes alongside their components — they are one of the very few cycling component manufacturers who also make complete carbon frames in-house in the UK. This vertical integration extends to nearly all small parts on their bikes coming from their own factory.
10Ian Weatherill, the co-founder, is famously hands-on — he still works on the shop floor regularly, personally tests new prototypes, and gives factory tours. The company has resisted multiple acquisition offers from larger conglomerates over 35+ years specifically to remain UK-manufactured and independently owned.
