Origin
The Instinct has been Rocky Mountain's trail all-rounder since 2013. The 2024 overhaul brought SMOOTHWALL carbon — a manufacturing technique using rigid internal moulds instead of air bladders, producing a frame claimed to be simultaneously lighter, stiffer, and tougher. Combined with a new reach-adjust headset and the RIDE-4 geo chip, the 2024 Instinct became Rocky Mountain's most configurable trail bike: riders can dial head angle and reach independently to match their style or local terrain.

The verdict
+Strengths
- SMOOTHWALL carbon is light, stiff, and reportedly impact-resistant
- Reach-adjust headset + RIDE-4 + chainstay chip = rare three-axis geo tuning on a trail bike
- Size-specific shock tunes deliver consistent feel across the size range
−Weaknesses
- High spec and adjustability options create a steep learning curve for setup
- Mullet configuration available but requires flip-chip swap — not tool-free
- Premium carbon builds are expensive relative to the trail category
