Neuron AL

Origin

The Neuron AL has been Canyon's friendly trail bike since 2014, deliberately designed as the entry-friendly counterpart to the more aggressive Spectral. With 130 mm rear and 140 mm front travel, a less radical 66-degree head angle, and a four-bar linkage tuned for pedalling efficiency over big-hit composure, the Neuron AL is aimed at riders graduating from hardtails or returning to mountain biking after a break. Canyon offers a mixed-wheel approach: XS and S frames run 27.5" wheels, M through XL run full 29ers. The current 2025-2026 lineup spans Neuron 5 at €1,899 with Shimano CUES, Neuron 6 at €2,499 with Deore M6100, and Neuron 7 at €2,999 with SRAM's wireless S1000 Eagle AXS Transmission—the cheapest electronic-shifting full-suspension MTB Canyon sells. Multiple generations have refined the geometry without ever pushing it into Spectral-aggressive territory; that segmentation discipline is part of why the Neuron remains Canyon's bestselling trail bike year after year.

The verdict

+Strengths
  • Triple Phase Suspension kinematics consistently praised across generations
  • Efficient climbing — 130mm rear, 66° HTA = well-suited for all-day rides
  • Light for alloy at ~15kg
  • Strong value at entry price ($1,599 AL5)
  • 27.5/29 by size = consistent handling for different rider heights
Weaknesses
  • Flow MTB: Fox 34 Rhythm fork — volume spacer needed for heavier/aggressive riders
  • MBR: older gen HTA 67.5° — too steep for aggressive trail. 2025 gen: 66° improved but still Spectral-conservative
  • Bikerumor: upper rear pivot points look small — 'fears weren't realized but concern exists'
  • Flow MTB: less stability on technical terrain vs bigger travel bikes — correct use is all-day efficiency not enduro
  • Canyon customer service reputation issues (Pinkbike comments on Neuron:ON — applies to acoustic too per brand reputation)
