01There is no 'real' brand for this part — when Baltic scooter shops sell a '350W motor', they're selling a commodity component from one of ~12 Chinese factories. The skill of the shop is which factory they trust, not which brand they stock.
02The Hall sensor PCB inside a cheap (€80-110) motor and a Bafang OEM (€150) motor look identical to the eye. The difference is conformal coating: a transparent silicone film painted over the PCB that prevents Tallinn slush water from creating leakage paths between traces. The coating costs ~€0.20 per motor in manufacturing — and is the single biggest predictor of whether the motor survives 2 Baltic winters.
03Xiaomi M365 OEM motors are widely believed to be made by Bafang Electric in Suzhou, but Xiaomi has never publicly confirmed this. Sometimes M365 motors from different model years show subtle differences (stator slot count, magnet count) suggesting Xiaomi has used multiple suppliers in parallel.
04The motor IS the rim. The aluminium housing is cast as a single piece with the spoke pattern built in. This is structurally elegant but means a single kerb strike can write off a €150 motor by bending the rim — there is no separate, replaceable rim component.
05The phase wire colour code (yellow/green/blue for U/V/W) is widely but not universally followed. Some Chinese suppliers ship motors with blue/green/yellow ordering. 07Bearing failure (~8000-12000km in Baltic conditions) is the most predictable failure mode because road salt and water accelerate corrosion of the bearing races. Riders in Western Europe (no salt) report 15000-20000km bearing life on the same motor.
08Hall sensor death is the most diagnostically tricky failure: the motor turns silently and freely by hand but stutters violently or refuses to start under power. The clue is that one phase shows wildly different inductance to the other two on a multimeter test — the dead Hall sensor causes the controller to mis-commutate that phase.
09EU L1e-A regulations cap rated power at 250W in some markets, which makes 350W motors technically illegal for road use on those platforms. In practice, enforcement is essentially zero — and Baltic riders predominantly buy 350W or larger regardless of nominal cap.
