The Santa Cruz Nomad debuted in 2005 as the brand's big-travel 'all-mountain' bruiser — a hydroformed aluminium frame with roughly 165mm of travel and the company's signature VPP (Virtual Pivot Point) dual-link suspension, which had been part of the Nomad's DNA from day one. It was conceived to be burly enough for big hits and bike-park days yet efficient enough to pedal all day, and it was an instant hit that helped define the emerging 'freeride meets trail' category. The first carbon Nomad arrived in 2010; the third generation in 2014 modernised the geometry and switched to 27.5" wheels. A pivotal 2017 redesign moved to a lower-link-driven shock, curing the old VPP 'hammock' mid-stroke wallow and delivering more consistent, tunable performance — the moment the Nomad earned its near-cult following. Since the V6 in 2023 the Nomad has become a dedicated mixed-wheel (mullet) bike with in-frame 'Glovebox' storage, and the current seventh generation (MY27) continues Santa Cruz's pattern of refinement over revolution.
