The main thing about a kids bike: right wheel size. Too big = child can't reach pedals, gets scared, quits. Too small = outgrown in 6 months.
Simple rule: go by **height**, not age. Same-age kids can have very different heights — so the chart below has both columns.

What bike for a 3-year-old?
12" wheels (balance bike or training wheels) at 85-100 cm height. A balance bike is best at this age — teaches balance without pedals. Most kids move to pedal bikes at 4-5.
What bike for a 4-year-old?
14-16" wheels at 95-115 cm. First pedal bike. Training wheels for 2-3 months max, then remove — otherwise child never learns balance. Bike weight under 8 kg.
What bike for a 5-year-old?
16-18" wheels at 105-125 cm. Most 5-year-olds are off training wheels. Look for ≤ 8 kg (child can lift it). Trek Precaliber 16, Cube Kid 160 — standard.
What bike for a 7-8-year-old?
20" wheels at 125-140 cm. Real kids MTBs appear with 6-7 gears. Trek Precaliber 20, Cube Kid 200. Hand brakes instead of coaster — adult mechanics.
What bike for a 10-year-old?
24" wheels at 135-150 cm. Mini-MTB — 7-21 gears, disc brakes, optional front suspension. Cube Kid 240, Trek Wahoo 24. Can ride with parents fully.
12-inch bike — what age and height?
12" for ages 2-4, height 85-100 cm. Usually balance bike or first pedal with training wheels.
14-inch bike — what age?
14" for ages 3-5, height 95-110 cm. First pedal bike. Intermediate between 12" and 16".
16-inch bike — what age?
16" for ages 4-6, height 105-120 cm. Standard first "real" bike.
18-inch bike — what age and height?
18" for ages 5-8, height 115-130 cm. Intermediate between 16" and 20".
20-inch bike — what age and height?
20" for ages 7-10, height 125-145 cm. Kids MTB with 6-7 gears. Most popular size for elementary school.
24-inch bike — what age and height?
24" for ages 9-12, height 135-155 cm. Mini-MTB with 7-21 gears and disc brakes. After 12 → 26" adult XS.
Budget for a kids bike in the Baltics?
€250-400 floor for reliable new (Trek, Cube, Cannondale kids). Under €200 usually heavy Chinese, child cannot lift. Used in good condition €100-200 — great option, kids outgrow in a year.
