Origin

Performance Elite (PE) was introduced ~2017 by Fox to fill the price gap between base Performance (with FIT GRIP cartridge, simpler air spring) and Factory (Kashima Coat, top damper). The strategy: give riders access to the SAME damper internals and air spring as Factory while saving cost on the friction-reducing Kashima coating. From MY2023 onwards (and decisively from MY2026), 36 PE carries the same GRIP X / GRIP X2 damper internals and Glidecore air spring as 36 Factory. Only the stanchion coating (anodized vs Kashima) and adjuster knob colour differ. 'Performance' = mid-tier in Fox naming hierarchy. 'Elite' = enhanced spec within the Performance tier (i.e. it carries top damper internals, just not top coating).

Did you know

01MY2026 36 PE uses literally the same GRIP X damper cartridge as Factory — Fox doesn't manufacture a separate version. The factory line just installs anodized stanchions instead of Kashima ones during the chassis build.
02Older PE 36 forks (2018-2022) used the FIT GRIP damper which was genuinely simpler than Factory's FIT4 — that's no longer the case from MY2023 onwards.
03Pinkbike and Vital MTB long-term reviews consistently rate PE as 'the value sweet spot' across the Fox lineup. Their reviewers note that bedded-in anodized stanchions become indistinguishable from Kashima in real-world feel after the first 50hr service.
04Kashima is a thin titanium nitride coating applied via electroplating — it's mechanically softer than the anodized aluminum underneath but has lower coefficient of friction. The performance gap matters most in the first 10-20 strokes of a cold fork; once warm, both finishes perform similarly.
05PE forks have stronger resale resistance to scratches than Kashima — Kashima can chip from rock strikes and reveal aluminum underneath, while anodized scratches show less visually.
06Fox 36 PE has been OEM-specced on Specialized Stumpjumper Comp, Trek Fuel EX 8, Santa Cruz Hightower S/R, Canyon Spectral CF 6-7, Norco Sight A1 — the value tier specs of most trail/AM bikes.
07Refurbished PE 36 forks from Fox service centres come back factory-fresh and command ~€500-650 on the second-hand market — a strong buy if you don't mind a service history.
