Origin

Performance Elite (PE) was introduced ~2017 by Fox to fill the price gap between base Performance (with FIT GRIP cartridge, simpler air spring) and Factory (Kashima Coat, top damper). The strategy: give riders access to the SAME damper internals and air spring as Factory while saving cost on the friction-reducing Kashima coating. From MY2023 onwards (and decisively from MY2026), 36 PE carries the same GRIP X / GRIP X2 damper internals and Glidecore air spring as 36 Factory. Only the stanchion coating (anodized vs Kashima) and adjuster knob colour differ. 'Performance' = mid-tier in Fox naming hierarchy. 'Elite' = enhanced spec within the Performance tier (i.e. it carries top damper internals, just not top coating).

The verdict

+Strengths
  • Same chassis as Factory: 36mm stanchions, +20% torsional stiffness vs prior gen (MY2026), 87% as stiff as Fox 38
  • Same damper internals (GRIP X or GRIP X2) as Factory — performance is identical, not 'almost as good'
  • Same Glidecore air spring as Factory (MY2026) — significant small-bump improvement
  • Anodized stanchions hold up better to rock strikes than Kashima (Kashima chips can reveal aluminum underneath)
  • €300-400 cheaper than Factory — money better spent on tires, wheels, or service kit
  • Matte black aesthetic — less flashy than Factory gold-on-gold; preferred by some riders
  • OEM-specced widely, so service parts and bushings are easy to source
  • Strong second-hand value retention — buyers know they're getting Factory damper internals
Weaknesses
  • Anodized stanchions require more frequent dust wiper service than Kashima to maintain low friction — 50hr religiously
  • Slightly heavier than Factory (+10-20g) due to coating density
  • Cold-fork stiction marginally higher than Kashima in first 10-20 strokes — disappears once fork is warm
  • No 51mm offset option (MY2026 dropped — same as Factory)
  • Matte black only — no colour variants like Factory's orange option
  • Confusion with older PE 36 (2018-2022) which had simpler FIT GRIP damper — check year and damper before buying second-hand
  • Kashima resale prestige is real — Factory holds value better at sale time on enthusiast markets even though function is identical
