Origin

GP 4000 S II had dominated for 4 years (2014-2018) and was widely considered the best road tyre money could buy. Continental took huge risk replacing it. Internal codename was '5K' during development. R&D took ~5 years.

TL variant (2019-2022) had stiff ride and heavy weight — many negative reviews of TL still circulate but are NOT applicable to current S TR
Casing less supple than Vittoria Corsa Pro TR (cotton/graphene casing) — Vittoria feels more 'planted' on rough roads at the cost of puncture resistance
Single Black Chili compound (no dual-compound) — some riders prefer Schwalbe ADDIX Race or Vittoria 4C Graphene 2.0 in extreme cold or wet
Aramid bead sometimes pops loudly on initial seating — sounds alarming, usually harmless if rim is tubeless-rated
Sealant can drop fast in dry/hot climates — top up every 2-3 months recommended
Sidewall tan-wall variants discontinued ~2023 — all-black only now (cosmetic)

01GP 5000 replaced GP 4000 S II — one of the most successful and long-running premium road tyres ever made (4 years of dominant production, 11 years on the platform). Replacing it was a major gamble.
02Continental was SCEPTICAL about road tubeless until 2018-2019 — they explicitly waited until casing and rim standards matured before releasing GP 5000 TL. Schwalbe was 4 years ahead in road tubeless.
03The Black Chili compound (introduced 2007 on GP 4000) is patented and proprietary — no other manufacturer can replicate it. Continental's bicycle tyre business is its smallest division but Black Chili is its R&D crown jewel.
04Vectran Breaker uses the same fibre that landed Mars Pathfinder safely on Mars in 1997 — liquid crystal polymer from Kuraray (Japan), 5x stronger than steel by weight.
05GP 5000 S TR was Continental's first hookless-compatible road tyre — certified to ETRTO 2020 standard. Maximum pressure 73 PSI on hookless (vs 116 PSI on hooked rims).
06Tour de France 2024: approx 8-10 of 22 WorldTour teams rode GP 5000 S TR (more than any other tyre), including Visma-Lease a Bike, Soudal Quick-Step, and Lidl-Trek.
07Production is fully in Korbach, Germany — Continental refused to move premium GP production to Asia despite cost pressure. Made-in-Germany is a key marketing point.
08GP 5000 S TR is consistently ranked #1 or #2 on bicyclerollingresistance.com — the largest independent rolling resistance database in cycling. Has held this position since 2021.
09The Lazer Grip siping on the shoulders is laser-etched AFTER vulcanisation — not moulded in. Allows finer detail and zero rolling resistance penalty on the slick centre.
10GP 5000 has been the OEM tyre on more high-end bikes than any other in 2020-2025 — Specialized Tarmac SL7/SL8, Cannondale SuperSix, Cervélo R5, BMC Teammachine all spec'd GP 5000 S TR at some tier.
