Origin

Hiboy is a Shenzhen-based Chinese e-mobility brand that launched in 2015 focusing on hoverboards before pivoting to e-scooters in 2018-2019. The S2 was Hiboy's breakthrough product — launched on Amazon US in late 2019 at $349 just as the post-Xiaomi-M365 budget e-scooter market exploded. Hiboy used aggressive Amazon advertising, sponsored YouTube reviews, and a US-warehoused fulfillment model (rare for a Chinese brand at that time) to dominate the sub-$400 segment for three years running. By 2022 the S2 was the #1 best-selling adult e-scooter on Amazon US in its price bracket. The success was based less on technical innovation and more on price-performance fit: 13.5 kg, foldable, dual brake, 25 km/h, Amazon-fast delivery, and competent enough for 90% of first-time buyers. The S2 became the 'first scooter' for millions of users worldwide.

Specifications

Brakes
E-ABS regenerative electronic anti-lock (motor-based) Front brake is electronic — no physical caliper. Mild regenerative effect, less aggressive than Segway G30. In emergencies, front E-ABS alone is inadequate. Open mechanical disc brake on rear wheel — actuated by hand lever on left grip. Effective in dry conditions but gets fouled by wet/mud (an open disc vs Segway G30's sealed drum). Brake pad replacements €5-10. Caliper alignment is a common DIY tweak after 1000+ km. Stopping distance is meaningfully longer than the Segway G30 (especially in wet). New riders should practice in a parking lot. The combination of 8.5" tires + open disc brake + lighter overall scooter means the S2 stops fast on dry pavement but struggles on wet cobblestone.

Buyer’s notes

01
If your daily commute is under 8 km one-way and you weigh under 85 kg, the base S2 (€349) is the right call. If commute is 8-15 km or you weigh more, stretch to S2 Pro (€449) — the €100 extra doubles real-world range. If you commute on Baltic cobblestone daily, look at S2 Max (suspension) or skip Hiboy and consider Segway MAX G30 or Xiaomi 4 Pro.
02
Buy Hiboy S2 on Amazon DE/FR/IT — NOT via AliExpress or unknown EU resellers. Amazon warranty support actually works; AliExpress 'Hiboy S2' listings are often clones (KuKirin, iScooter) with weaker batteries and no real warranty. Verify the Hiboy logo is laser-etched.
03
Baltic warranty reality: if your S2 fails under warranty, you'll return it to Amazon DE via cross-border shipping (€20-40 cost, slow). For first-time buyers without Amazon Prime returns experience, consider buying a Xiaomi 4 Pro or Segway from local Senukai / 220.lv / Euronics instead — warranty service is much faster locally.
04
Used S2 buying: always ask for app screenshot showing battery, total km, ride mode settings. If seller doesn't have the Hiboy app paired or refuses to show diagnostics, walk away — likely abused unit or clone. Cap your offer at 50-65% of new MSRP for 2-year-old S2 in good condition.
05
Tire strategy: budget for 2-4 punctures per year with stock tubed tires. Either accept frequent tube changes (€5-10 + 30 minutes DIY) or switch to solid PU tires (€40-60, harsher ride but zero punctures). Most experienced S2 owners go solid after the third flat.
06
Winter Baltic strategy: S2 IPX4 rating is the weak point. Below 0°C, range drops 30-50%. Below -10°C, expect 50%+ loss. Best practice: store battery and scooter indoors when not riding, charge while battery is still warm (right after riding), avoid riding in heavy snow or salty slush. Most Baltic S2 owners switch to bus/bike Dec-Feb.
07
Battery longevity reality: generic Chinese 18650 cells in the S2 age faster than Segway's premium LG cells. Realistic battery life is 3000-6000 km to 70% capacity — about half of Segway G30's 8000-15000 km. Factor this into the price/value comparison.
08
Theft prevention: S2 has no GPS or built-in alarm. Add an AirTag/SmartTag/Tile under the deck (€30-40 one-time). Use a U-lock through the folding stem. In Baltic city centres (Tallinn old town, Riga centrs, Vilnius senamiestis), never leave the S2 unlocked — light, foldable scooters are easy targets.
09
Brake maintenance: rear disc brake pad replacement at 2000-3000 km (€5-10 pads, 20-minute DIY). Front E-ABS is electronic — no maintenance needed, just keep firmware updated via app. Caliper alignment check every 1000 km — if you hear scraping, the caliper has shifted.
10
Stem lock check: after 12-18 months of daily folding, the locking lever may develop play. Adjust the tension bolt at the lever base (10-minute DIY) or add an aftermarket safety strap. NOT a safety recall but worth monitoring on used purchases.
11
Display fogging in 2-3 year-old units is the most common failure pattern. Replacement display assemblies are €30-50 on Amazon/AliExpress. If buying used and the display has any internal fogging visible, factor €40 replacement into your offer.
12
Don't expect a 'fast scooter feel' — the S2 has 350 W rated / 500 W peak motor. Acceleration from 0-25 km/h is leisurely (~5-6 seconds). Hills above 15% will slow you to walking pace. This is normal for the price tier, not a defect.
05

Law & registration

All three Baltic states recognise EU-spec Hiboy S2 as a personal light electric vehicle. Helmet, alcohol, and minimum-age rules differ by country.
