Roscoe
Origin
The Roscoe is Trek's hardtail trail mountain bike — positioned above the entry-level Marlin and below full-suspension models like the Fuel EX. It is built around an Alpha Gold aluminium frame with modern trail geometry (slacker head angle, longer reach, steeper seat tube than the Marlin), a 140mm-travel suspension fork, 29" wheels on SM-XL frames and 27.5" on XS, a dropper post on every trim, and wide 2.4-2.6" tyres for traction on technical descents. The lineup typically runs three trims: Roscoe 6 (entry, Shimano CUES 1x10, hydraulic discs, around €1,199), Roscoe 7 (Shimano Deore 1x12, dropper, around €1,499-1,699), and Roscoe 8 (SRAM NX Eagle 1x12, 4-piston brakes, around €1,999-2,199). The platform is aimed at riders who want one-by trail capability without paying for full suspension — a 'modern hardtail' rather than a cross-country bike. It is widely regarded as one of the best-value trail hardtails on the European market and a popular bikepark rental bike. Unlike the Marlin, the Roscoe is intentionally over-forked relative to traditional XC geometry, making it confident on steeper, rougher descents than its frame suggests.

The verdict
- Modern, aggressive trail geometry (65° head angle) provides stability and confidence on steep descents
- Lots of frame sizes (5 sizes with mixed wheel approach) provide good fit across rider heights
- Excellent value proposition — modern trail standards at accessible price point
- Fun, playful ride character — described as a 'party bike' that encourages riders to push limits
- Versatile — handles both trail riding and light dirt jump / urban riding
- Good frame protection (chainstay guard, internal routing)
- 150mm fork travel (Gen 4) provides excellent capability for a hardtail
- Wide tires can feel vague and roll at high speeds Specific to Gen 3 Roscoe 7 with 2.6" tires
- Stock brakes on Roscoe 7 (Shimano MT200 2-piston) considered weak for aggressive trail riding Roscoe 8 addresses this with 4-piston M6100 brakes
- Weight can feel heavy compared to shorter-travel XC-focused hardtails
- Dropper post quality on lower-spec models has been criticized (sticky operation reported) Gen 4 uses TranzX dropper — may differ from earlier models
- Roscoe 7 Gen 4 downgraded to 1x10 Shimano CUES (from 1x12 Deore in Gen 3) while maintaining similar price
