Marlin Women's (WSD)
Origin
The Marlin Women's was Trek's entry-level hardtail mountain bike adapted to its Women's Specific Design programme — the same Alpha Silver aluminium frame as the men's Marlin, fitted with a women's saddle, shorter-reach brake levers, narrower grips, and offered in smaller XS/S frame sizes with 27.5" wheels (men's XL got 29"). It shipped with an SR Suntour XCT/XCM coil-spring suspension fork (100mm travel), hydraulic or mechanical disc brakes depending on trim, and a 2x or 3x Shimano drivetrain. The Marlin was always positioned as a daily-driver trail bike for beginners — capable on smooth singletrack, fire roads, and gravel paths but not built for technical descents. Trek retired the WSD designation across mountain bikes around 2021-2022, replacing it with unisex sizing plus size-specific contact points; today's Marlin Gen 3 lineup (Marlin 4/5/6/7/8) covers what was formerly split into men's and women's catalogues. Used Marlin WSD bikes from 2017-2021 are common in European second-hand markets at €350-700.

The verdict
- Excellent value as an entry-level women's hardtail — Trek build quality, dealer support and a 5-year frame warranty at a budget price
- Women's-specific touchpoints (Bontrager Ajna saddle, narrower bars, grips) improve fit and comfort for many smaller riders straight out of the box
- Smart Wheel Size (27.5" on XS/S, 29" on M/ML) plus low standover make it genuinely accessible to shorter riders who struggle on standard MTBs
- Versatile frame with rack and kickstand mounts plus internal routing — doubles as a commuter/utility bike, not just a trail XC bike
- Hydraulic disc brakes and a lockout fork even on mid trims give predictable stopping and efficient climbing for the price
- 135×5 mm QR rear axle is dated — flexes under hard cornering and limits fork/wheel upgrades versus a modern 148×12 mm thru-axle (fixed only on the later unisex Marlin Gen 3)
- Budget SR Suntour XCT/XCM forks on Marlin 5/6 have minimal damping and dive on steep descents; only the Marlin 7 gets the better RockShox unit
- Discontinued since ~2021 — available on the used market only, no warranty transfer guarantees or new-bike availability for the WSD/Women's name
- XC geometry and ~100 mm travel limit it to light trail and gradual terrain; not suited to aggressive descending or technical singletrack
- Lower trims use 2×/3× drivetrains and non-tubeless-ready wheels, adding weight and maintenance versus a modern 1× setup
