FX Women's / FX WSD
Origin
The FX Women's grew out of Trek's Fitness Cross (FX) hybrid line, the brand's flat-bar bridge between road efficiency and city practicality. It launched in the Women's-Specific Design (WSD) era as the numeric 7.x FX WSD (~2009-2014), then was rebranded to the alphanumeric 'FX Women's' (2019-2021). Rather than being discontinued like most of Trek's WSD models, the easy-access frame proved universally popular, so Trek renamed it 'Stagger' (2022-2023) and 'Midstep' (2024-present) — keeping the bike but dropping the gendered label.
Specifications
- Frame
- Alpha Gold Aluminum, DuoTrap S compatible, internal cable routing, flat mount disc, rack & fender mounts (FX 2 / FX 3 Women's). WSD-era frames used Alpha White/Gold aluminum with stagger/standard top-tube options.
- Weight
- kg
- Drivetrain
- FX 2 Disc Women's: 3×8 (24-spd) — Shimano Altus M310 shifters, Acera M360 rear / Tourney TY710 front derailleurs, HG31 11-32 cassette, 48/38/28 alloy crank. FX 3 Disc Women's: 2×9 (18-spd) — Shimano Acera M3000 shifter/rear, T3000 front, HG200 11-36 cassette, Shimano MT210 46/30T crank. Current Gen-4 Midstep: 1×9 Shimano CUES.
- Brakes
- FX 2 Disc Women's: Tektro HD-R280 hydraulic disc, flat mount, 160 mm rotors. FX 3 Disc Women's: Shimano MT201 hydraulic disc, flat mount, 160 mm rotors. WSD-era entry models used rim V-brakes.
- Wheels
- FX 2: Bontrager Connection alloy double-wall 32h rims on Formula DC-20 (front) / DC-22 (rear) 6-bolt hubs, 135×5 mm QR. FX 3: Bontrager Tubeless Ready Disc 32h rims, same Formula hubs, 14g stainless spokes.
The verdict
- Low-standover / step-through frame makes mounting and dismounting effortless — genuinely valuable for commuters, riders in skirts, older riders and anyone with mobility limits, not just women.
- Lightweight Alpha Gold aluminum frame with reliable, widely-serviceable Shimano drivetrain and (on disc models) hydraulic disc brakes for all-weather stopping.
- Excellent value and Trek's dealer/warranty network; FX 3 Women's adds a carbon fork that meaningfully smooths road vibration over the alloy-fork FX 2.
- Versatile fitness-hybrid: efficient flat-bar geometry for training rides plus rack/fender mounts and DuoTrap S compatibility for commuting and tracking.
- Women's-specific Bontrager saddle and touchpoints with a 30-day comfort guarantee, easing fit for many riders.
- Stiff aluminum frame with rigid fork transmits road vibration; entry FX 2 (alloy fork) and older WSD models are noticeably harsher than the carbon-forked FX 3.
- Flat handlebar with a single hand position can cause wrist/elbow ache on rides longer than ~1 hour.
- Stock plastic platform pedals and budget-feeling cranks/cockpit on lower tiers are common first upgrades.
- Entry WSD-era models with rim V-brakes wear pads quickly and stop poorly in the wet — avoid for serious commuting; step up to a disc model.
- Rigid fork + narrow 700×32-35c slick tires mean it is road/path only — no real off-road or rough-gravel capability, and Trek publishes no official weight.
