ES2
Origin
The ES2 is a product of the 2015 merger that reshaped the personal-mobility industry: Beijing startup Ninebot, backed by $80M from Xiaomi and Sequoia, acquired the original American self-balancing pioneer Segway Inc. to form Segway-Ninebot. The combined company pivoted from expensive self-balancing transporters toward affordable folding kick-scooters for the urban mass market. The KickScooter ES line (ES1, ES2, ES4) arrived in 2017-2018 as that push, sharing a chassis with — and directly rivalling — the Xiaomi M365. Launched in 2018, the ES2 slotted in as the middle child: more powerful and better-equipped than the entry ES1, and upgradeable to the twin-battery ES4 via a bolt-on external pack. It became one of the defining early commuter e-scooters of the 2018-2020 micromobility boom and a common sight in shared fleets and private garages across Europe.
Specifications

- kg
- Brakes
- Front electronic/regenerative (KERS) + rear mechanical foot (fender) brake
The verdict
- Genuinely light and portable (12.5 kg) with a quick one-piece fold — easy to carry up stairs and onto public transport
- Front + rear suspension and configurable LED lighting give it a more premium feel than same-price rivals
- Puncture-proof solid tires plus a well-supported app (cruise control, speed modes, lock, firmware) — low-maintenance ownership
- Weak 300W single motor: sluggish acceleration and only ~10% hill grade — struggles with inclines and heavier riders
- Real-world range (~15 km) falls well short of the 25 km claim; you almost need the external battery for real commuting
- Solid tires + small 8" wheels make the ride harsh on cobbles/uneven surfaces despite the suspension
Generations
ES1
- Entry model: no suspension on early units, lower power/speed. Below the ES2.
ES2
- The mid-tier: front+rear suspension, more power/speed, external-battery upgrade path.
ES4 (= ES2 + external battery)
- Factory twin-battery ES2 — same chassis, double range, higher top speed and climb.
