Contessa Speedster / Contessa Speedster Gravel
road899–1999 GBP
01
Origin
2012. The Contessa Speedster was the women's version of Scott's entry/mid endurance road bike — alloy frame, carbon fork, comfortable endurance geometry. It served women riders wanting a capable road or gravel commuter at a reasonable price point without needing to buy a race-oriented bike.

The verdict
+Strengths
- Identical geometry to unisex Speedster — no performance compromise for women's model
- Carbon fork on all models — front-end compliance and vibration damping
- Internal cable routing — protected from weather, cleaner aesthetic
- Hidden fender mounts — practical for year-round commuting and Baltic climate
- EQ variant with pre-fitted fenders — complete commuter package out of box
- Off.road.cc: 'Carbon fork goes some way to provide more comfort at front end'
- Compact 400mm drop bars with rearward curve bring hoods closer — ergonomic for smaller hands/shorter reach
- Same price as men's equivalent — no women's tax
- GRX groupset on gravel models (later years) — gravel-optimised shifting and braking
−Weaknesses
- Off.road.cc: 'Alloy frame doesn't offer the smoothest ride — unforgiving over long distances'
- Mechanical disc on entry Gravel 25 (single-pad-moving type) — less efficient, requires manual adjustment as pads wear
- Tiagra derailleur swings audibly on gravel — rattle noise on rough surfaces
- 35mm maximum tyre clearance on Gravel 25 — limited adventuring potential
- Long seat tube on some sizes limits dropper post fitment
- Off.road.cc: 'Really more of an all-round road bike than an adventurer' — manages expectations for serious gravel use
- Classic road bike frame shape 'not keeping with today's fashionable trends for low-slung top tube'
