Origin

2011. The Contessa Genius launched as Scott's women's trail/all-mountain full-suspension platform — the women's equivalent of their flagship Genius. Like all Contessa MTBs at this performance level, the frame geometry is identical to the men's version, with women's-specific contact points and a lighter shock tune. It covers the trail riding gap between the XC-focused Contessa Spark (120mm) and the enduro-oriented Contessa Ransom (170mm).

The verdict

+Strengths
  • Identical geometry to men's Genius — no performance penalty for women's model
  • Fox Contessa Custom Tune shock meaningfully improves small-bump compliance for lighter riders
  • TwinLoc 2 with integrated dropper — one lever cluster manages suspension + dropper
  • IST integrated shock (Gen 6) — protected from elements, lower CoG
  • 65°+ HTA and modern reach — genuinely confidence-inspiring geometry
  • UDH on all Gen 6 models — field-repairable derailleur hanger
  • Fox 36 fork (160mm) matches well with 150mm rear — balanced travel
  • BikeMag: '65.6° HTA makes for comfortable aggressive position on downs; 75.3° STA keeps body centred on climbs'
  • Enduro MTB: 'Capable, confidence inspiring, lightweight and versatile'
Weaknesses
  • BikeRadar (2020, 910): 'Alloy frame heavier and more sluggish than carbon competitors in test'
  • Stock tyres (Maxxis Rekon/Dissector) criticised as insufficient for wet/technical conditions — tyre swap recommended
  • 740–780mm bars — narrower than men's equivalent; Enduro MTB Magazine recommended wider bars
  • Dropper travel on small sizes (S: 100–140mm depending on gen) limits descending style for shorter riders
  • 3 sizes only (S/M/L on 920) — no XL (Contessa ST 920 adds XL)
  • Used market: 'resale market for women's specific bikes is terrible' (Pinkbike community) — lower used values than men's equivalent
