Origin

The Tallboy launched in 2009 as one of the first capable 29" full-suspension mountain bikes — originally an aluminum 100 mm XC platform. Over five generations Santa Cruz has steadily slackened and lowered the geometry while keeping travel short, turning it into what reviewers call 'the downhiller's XC bike.' The current v5 (2023+) sits firmly in the down-country bracket: 120 mm rear / 130 mm fork, lower-link VPP suspension, and a Glovebox downtube storage compartment.

The verdict

+Strengths
  • Exceptional all-round speed — climbs and pedals efficiently yet descends far above its 120 mm travel class
  • Stiff, precise carbon chassis with confident, planted steering
  • Well-tuned Fox/RockShox suspension that rides high and stays sensitive on small bumps
  • Size-specific chainstays and seat angle give consistent handling across all frame sizes
  • Practical extras: Glovebox downtube storage, lifetime warranty, premium Reserve carbon wheel options
Weaknesses
  • Stock SRAM Level brakes lack outright power for the speed the bike encourages
  • Stock Maxxis Forekaster 2.4" tires feel under-gunned for aggressive descending
  • OneUp dropper remote lever tip is uncomfortably sharp for some riders
  • Tempts owners to over-build it with heavier parts, eroding its light, versatile nature
  • Premium price — flagship builds reach ~€8,000-10,500, expensive for 120 mm of travel
