20R
Origin
RION Motors is a small, hand-build workshop based in Los Angeles, founded in the early-to-mid 2010s (commonly cited as ~2012-2014) by Chris Rion. Rion saw an unfilled niche for extreme performance in a compact personal vehicle and set out to build electric scooters the way race machines are built: carbon-fibre monocoque construction, aerospace-grade materials and dual high-drain hub motors. The RION RE90 became famous as one of the world's fastest electric scooters and the first to use that much carbon fibre — chassis, stem pole and handlebar all moulded in carbon, keeping weight remarkably low for the power on tap. The RION2 generation (RE80, RE90 and their battery-pack trims, of which the 20R is one) refined the platform with programmable dual controllers, Molicel/21700 race packs and PMT Italian slicks. Every unit is essentially made to order in LA, with long waiting lists — these are boutique hyperscooters, not mass-market commuters, and they carry prices to match.

The verdict
- Extreme power-to-weight — carbon-fibre construction gives hyperscooter speed at a light kerb weight.
- Premium race hardware throughout: hydraulic disc brakes, PMT Italian slicks, programmable dual controllers.
- Hand-built exclusivity and genuine top-tier top speed put it among the fastest scooters ever sold.
- No real weather protection and little to no suspension — impractical and harsh for everyday use.
- Very high price, long lead times and boutique support; parts and service are hard to source outside the US.
- Soft PMT tires wear quickly and the raw power is genuinely dangerous for inexperienced riders.
Generations
RION (Gen 1 / Special Edition)
- Original ultra-light carbon build (~18 kg), Shimano XT brakes, rear-only stiff suspension.
RION2 RE-series (incl. 20R, ~2022+)
- Programmable dual controllers, race packs, PMT slicks, Magura/Shimano hydraulics; the 20R sits mid-pack between RE80 and RE90.
