Origin

Cycles Peugeot is one of the oldest names in cycling, founded in 1882 in Sochaux, France, after Armand Peugeot hand-built an early penny-farthing. The marque went on to become the most successful factory team in the history of the Tour de France, taking a record ten overall victories, the first with Louis Trousselier in 1905. Its black-and-white chequerboard livery and Reynolds 531 steel race frames — the PX-10 above all — made Peugeot a defining brand of the classic era of European road racing. The bicycle business later passed through several owners and is today licensed under Cycleurope (part of Sweden's Grimaldi Industri), relaunched in 2011 with a modern road range (R01, R02, eR02) plus the neo-retro Legend collection. There has never been a distinct Peugeot model officially called "Racer"; the term is a generic descriptor of a Peugeot road/racing bike rather than a real product line.

Specifications

Frame
Peugeot road models use carbon (R02), aluminium (R02 Aluminium/R01) or lugged steel (Legend LR01) — cannot be assigned to a generic 'Racer'
Drivetrain
Peugeot road builds range from Shimano Claris/Tiagra (entry) to 105 and Ultegra 11-speed (higher trims)
Brakes
Higher road trims use flat-mount hydraulic disc brakes on thru-axle hubs; entry/retro trims may use rim brakes

The verdict

+Strengths
  • Strong, genuine racing heritage and recognisable brand livery
  • Modern road range covers a broad price spread (entry alloy to carbon Ultegra)
  • Retro Legend LR01 offers distinctive lugged-steel style at a low price point
Weaknesses
  • "Racer" is not a real, verifiable Peugeot model — specs here cannot be pinned down
  • Modern Peugeot cycles are a licensed brand, not the historic in-house race program
  • Limited independent professional reviews of the current road line compared with mainstream brands
