Origin

Peugeot's bicycle story predates its cars by decades. Cycles Peugeot was founded in 1882 in Beaulieu-sur-Doubs (Mandeure), France, when Armand Peugeot built 'Le Grand Bi', a penny-farthing, out of the family's steelworks. The famous lion emblem dates to 1858 and has ridden on Peugeot frames ever since. On the road Peugeot became the most successful factory team in Tour de France history, winning the race a record ten times, and its riders took world sprint titles as early as 1896. In 1926 the bicycle and automobile arms formally split into separate companies. Today Cycles Peugeot operates under Cycleurope (part of Sweden's Grimaldi Industri), which licenses the Peugeot name for bikes. The modern City range - the neo-retro LEGEND LC01 (launched around 2018-2020) and the practical C02 - deliberately leans on this 130-plus-year heritage, reviving the black-and-white chequered decor and the 'triple lion' chainset from Peugeot's mid-century town bikes.

The verdict

+Strengths
  • Distinctive neo-retro looks with real Peugeot heritage - stands out against generic hybrids.
  • Well-equipped out of the box for commuting: rack, mudguards, kickstand, and (on N7/C02) integrated lock and dynamo lights.
  • Nexus 7 hub trims offer low-maintenance, weatherproof shifting you can change at a standstill - ideal for stop-start city riding.
Weaknesses
  • Rim/V-brakes on the standard City trims lose bite in the wet compared with the disc brakes on Peugeot's electric city models.
  • Component spec is entry-to-mid (Shimano Tourney, basic alloy parts) - fine for flat commuting, not for heavy loads or hilly routes.
  • It is a licensed brand, not built by the carmaker, and dealer/service coverage in the Baltics is thin - parts and support can be a hassle.
