Origin

The Occam is Orbea's quiver-killer trail bike. Because 'trail' means different things to different people, Orbea split the 2024 model into two distinct bikes sharing the same frame: the fast, pedaly SL (Super Light) and the aggressive, mini-enduro LT (Long Travel). Gen 3 (2020-2023): Moved to asymmetrical frame design and 29er only. Offered in 140mm standard and 150mm LT versions. Gen 4 (2024-present): Formal split into Occam SL (140/140mm, remote lockout) and Occam LT (160/150mm, adjustable geo). Added 'Lockr' down tube storage.

The verdict

+Strengths
  • Clever, functional frame: Lockr internal down-tube storage, hidden multi-tool, clean cable routing that prevents chafing.
  • Two genuinely distinct bikes from one frame — SL is a lively, efficient climber, LT is composed and confidence-inspiring on the descents.
  • LT delivers tons of traction from a sensitive, pedal-neutral rear suspension; SL carves tight corners fast through flowing trail.
  • Intuitive, accessible handling that feels good from the first ride.
  • M10 build (~€5,999) widely cited as the best price-to-performance point in the range.
Weaknesses
  • Stock 180 mm rotors overheat on long descents — reviewers recommend upgrading to larger discs.
  • SL's shallow-tread, lightweight Super Race casing tires lack traction on loam and are puncture-prone.
  • Chain slap against the shifter cable caused damage after minimal testing; upper seat stays left unprotected by the frame film and mark easily.
  • SL reaches its limits quickly on rough terrain and rewards a clean riding style; even the LT gets overwhelmed on the very roughest trails.
  • LT is heavy (~14.6 kg in L) for a 150 mm trail bike, blunting climbing snap versus the SL.
