Origin

The Kahuna has been Kona's flagship hardtail for two decades, evolving from a steel cross-country race bike into a versatile 29er trail hardtail. The name and spirit — inspired by Hawaiian surf culture — has remained constant even as the platform embraced bigger wheels, dropper posts, and Boost spacing. It sits above the more entry-level Mahuna, offering a RockShox air fork, 12-speed drivetrain, and progressive geometry for riders ready to push on local singletrack.

The verdict

+Strengths
  • Excellent value with air fork, 12-speed drivetrain, and hydraulic disc brakes at its price point
  • Lifetime frame warranty and dropper-post-ready internals add long-term value
  • 29" wheels and modern geometry handle trail riding confidently
Weaknesses
  • 100mm travel limits confidence on steeper, more technical descents
  • Entry-level Recon Silver fork is the first thing serious riders tend to upgrade
  • Heavier alloy construction compared to premium carbon hardtails
