Origin
Gotrax is a Dallas, Texas based personal-electric-vehicle company that started in the hoverboard boom around 2017 and quickly grew into one of the largest budget PEV brands, selling over a million units in its first several years. The original GXL Commuter arrived as an affordable entry scooter and was famously stress-tested by Electrek in 2019 for its sub-$300 price. The GXL V2 refined that formula for the commuter and first-time-buyer market: it kept the low price but added a proper hand-lever rear disc brake, front EABS anti-lock regen braking, cruise control and reinforced components. It went on to become one of Gotrax's best-selling scooters and, for a huge number of people, their literal introduction to riding an electric scooter.

The verdict
- Excellent braking for the price (front EABS anti-lock + rear hand disc) with short, controlled stops
- Very affordable and light (~12 kg), easy to fold and carry
- 8.5" pneumatic tires give a smoother ride than the solid tires on many rivals
- Real-world range (~7-9 mi) and speed fall well short of the marketed 12 mi / 15.5 mph, especially with a heavier rider or hills
- Weak hill-climbing and low power from the single 250W motor
- Bare-bones features: basic LCD, no app, no taillight, pneumatic tires prone to punctures, and reports of the carry latch wearing
