Origin

Cube is a German bicycle brand founded in 1993 by Marcus Puerner in Waldershof, Bavaria, which grew from a small factory-corner operation into one of Europe's largest bike makers, known for aggressively priced aluminium and carbon bikes across road, MTB and e-bike ranges. The Cubie line is Cube's dedicated children's family, and the '160' denotes the 16-inch wheel size that sits between the 12-inch Cubie 120 balance/first bikes and the larger 180/200 models. Rather than treating kids' bikes as an afterthought, Cube applies the same aluminium-frame philosophy and MTB-inspired styling to the Cubie range, giving young riders a bike that visually mirrors what their parents ride. The Cubie 160 has been a fixture of Cube's kids catalogue since around 2019 (evolving from earlier 'Kid 160' naming) and is refreshed yearly with new colours and periodic component updates.

The verdict

+Strengths
  • Light, genuinely quality 6061 aluminium frame that is easy for a small child to control and holds resale value.
  • Beginner-friendly braking — the rear coaster brake lets a child stop by back-pedalling before hand-lever coordination develops.
  • Well-finished, durable Cube build with mudguards and chainguard included; grows with the child via adjustable saddle and bars.
Weaknesses
  • Not the lightest in class — the coaster-brake versions sit around 7.4-7.5 kg, heavier than premium hand-brake-only 16-inch bikes.
  • The rear coaster brake divides opinion: it can teach a bad back-pedal habit and complicates a later move to two hand brakes.
  • Single gear and modest street tyres limit it to smooth paths and gentle terrain — it is a learner bike, not a trail bike (except the Actionteam trim).
