Blast
Origin
Carrera is the in-house bicycle brand of Halfords, the UK's largest motoring and cycling retailer. Established in the 1980s to fill a gap in the mid-range bike market, Carrera has grown into one of Britain's best-known bike names, sold exclusively through Halfords and its online channels. The bikes are designed and specified in the UK by Halfords' own engineering team, with manufacturing outsourced to factories in Asia and a declared focus on testing and customer feedback under the brand's 'Designed For More' banner. The Blast sits at the affordable end of Carrera's junior mountain-bike line: it is meant as a child's first 'proper' geared mountain bike with real suspension and knobbly tyres, bridging the gap between a pavement bike and a grown-up hardtail as kids graduate onto 20" and then 24" wheels.

The verdict
- Aluminium frame keeps weight sensible for the price (20" ~11 kg) and won't rust
- Real size ladder with a proper spec step-up — 24" gets disc brakes and 14 speeds
- Growth-friendly and forgiving: adjustable seatpost, reach-adjust levers, lifetime frame/fork guarantee, easy twist shifting
- Heavy relative to premium kids brands (Frog, Islabike) — the 24" at ~14 kg is a lot for a child
- Budget coil suspension fork adds weight and does little; largely cosmetic on light trails
- Entry-level components (V-brakes on 20", cable discs on 24", Revoshift) need regular adjustment and can feel vague
