Grand Canyon:ON
Origin
When Canyon launched the Grand Canyon:ON in 2020 it was the brand's first eMTB hardtail, taking its popular Grand Canyon aluminium hardtail platform and adding a Shimano STEPS motor to create an affordable, direct-to-consumer entry into electric mountain biking. In March 2025 Canyon fully redesigned the bike around the new Bosch Performance Line CX Gen5 motor and a modular battery system scaling up to 1050 Wh, repositioning it as a do-it-all adventure hardtail for explorers rather than a pure budget option.

The verdict
- Bosch Performance Line CX Gen5 motor is lighter, near-silent and delivers strong, refined torque with excellent climbing traction
- Exceptional price-to-quality ratio versus competitors (AL 7 from €2,799)
- Modular Bosch battery (600/750/800 Wh + range extender to 1050 Wh) lets riders tune capacity vs weight
- Category-3 aluminium frame is built to full-suspension eMTB test standards — robust for a hardtail
- Stable, intuitive, beginner-friendly handling; versatile across trail, gravel and commuting
- AL 7 stock fork (SR Suntour XCM coil) is not air-adjustable, limiting sensitivity on technical/rocky descents
- Entry-level Shimano MT200 2-piston brakes on AL 7 need longer stopping distances under full eMTB load
- Hardtail frame is less comfortable and capable on rough terrain than a full-suspension eMTB
- AL 7 lacks a dropper post (only on AL 8/AL 9)
- Canyon is online-direct only — no in-person test rides or local dealer support, and ~25 kg feels heavy in stationary handling
