Treadwell Neo
Origin
Launched in 2020 as the e-bike sibling of the popular non-electric Treadwell flat-bar urban bike, the Treadwell Neo was built around one insight — most city riders don't want a bike that looks like an e-bike. The frame hides a ~250 Wh battery inside the down tube and pairs it with a discreet rear-hub motor: the original Neo and Neo EQ Remixte used the MAHLE ebikemotion X35 (250W, 40 Nm, controlled by a single iWoc top-tube button), while the later Treadwell Neo 2 switched to a Hyena MRC-250 250W hub paired with a proper handlebar-mounted HMI and a phone app. Both deliver natural, cadence-sensed pedal assist capped at the EU 25 km/h pedelec limit. The relaxed 'Ride-Easy' geometry, OutFront fork offset and 650b x 47c Maxxis tires give it a calm, upright city ride. 'EQ' trims add fenders, lights and a front basket for commuter readiness; 'Remixte' denotes the low step-through frame. The platform remains a core part of Cannondale's urban e-fitness lineup through 2025-2026.

The verdict
- Stealth design — battery and hub motor are hidden, so it looks like a normal city bike, not an e-bike
- Light and well-balanced for the class (~18 kg fully equipped EQ, base Neo lighter), rides naturally with motor off
- Smooth, natural cadence-based assist that augments pedalling rather than throttling
- Comfortable upright 'Ride-Easy' geometry on plush 650b x 47c tires; quality all-alloy build with hydraulic disc brakes
- EQ trims arrive commuter-ready with fenders, integrated lights and front basket
- Non-removable battery — cannot be taken off the bike for convenient indoor charging
- Modest ~250 Wh capacity and limited climbing power; assist lingers slightly after you stop pedalling
- Original Neo's single iWoc top-tube button is unintuitive and forces a hand off the bars to change assist
- No rear rack and no eyelets to retrofit one; front basket capped at ~10 kg
- Notable motor drag when coasting/unpowered, and fenders need regular re-adjustment; front rack was recalled for safety
