Topstone Carbon

Origin
The Topstone Carbon arrived in 2019 as Cannondale's answer to the gravel boom — and its headline trick was KingPin, a rear-suspension idea borrowed from the brand's love of simplicity. Instead of a shock and pivots, a thru-axle pivot in the seat tube lets the rear triangle flex up to 30 mm, taking the edge off rough surfaces while keeping the frame light and low-maintenance. Later generations folded in SmartSense lighting/radar and downtube storage, cementing the Topstone as a do-everything drop-bar bike.

The verdict
+Strengths
- KingPin rear flex genuinely smooths rough gravel without weight penalty
- Versatile: dropper-ready, big tire clearance, SmartSense-ready
- Light, lively carbon ride that still handles long days
−Weaknesses
- 30 mm of flex is comfort, not true suspension — rough descents still transmit a lot
- Carbon builds carry a premium over the alloy Topstone
- SmartSense adds weight and another battery to manage
