URS (UnReStricted)
Origin
URS — short for UnReStricted — is BMC's first gravel bike, launched in 2019 as the brand's drop-bar answer to the UCI-free gravel category. The name nods both to the lack of regulation in gravel and to 'Ursa' (the bear) plus the Swiss cabin where it was unveiled. BMC built it by cross-pollinating its mountain-bike division: it borrows the MTT (Micro Travel Technology) elastomer suspension from BMC's XC hardtails. A second generation arrived in 2024, doubling down on the 'drop-bar XC bike' identity with more integrated suspension across fork, seatstays and stem.

The verdict
- Outstanding off-road handling and descending confidence thanks to slack, long-front-centre MTB-inspired geometry
- MTT suspension (fork + seatstays + seatpost) delivers genuine comfort and traction on rough terrain without a full rear shock
- Integrated downtube storage, UDH, and abundant fork/rack/fender mounts make it bikepacking-ready
- On lighter rigid builds it's still fast enough on tarmac to keep pace with road-leaning gravel bikes
- Tire clearance (42-45 mm) is restrictive for a bike this capable off-road — many reviewers want 2.0"+
- Heavier than peers in its price bracket; the MTT fork alone adds ~800 g over a rigid fork
- Less competitive on pure road — stability geometry and weight blunt sprints and steady climbs
- Suspension saps some pedalling efficiency; front end bobs when sprinting out of the saddle, and the suspension stem takes acclimation
- D-shaped seatpost means no dropper-post compatibility; MTT hydraulic service is Europe-only (HiRide), and high price lacks an accessible entry version
