Origin

BMC launched the Alpenchallenge AMP in 2018-2019 as a premium, sport-oriented e-bike family built around the lightweight Shimano STEPS mid-drive and a carbon (or, on AL trims, aluminium) monocoque frame. Rather than a single bike, it spans urban-leaning variants — AMP City, AMP Cross and the faired AMP Road — each tuned for a different rider while sharing the same clean, integrated design language. The goal was an e-bike that looked and rode like a proper performance bike rather than a heavy commuter: discreet power, hidden battery and cabling, and BMC's signature handling. The carbon City and Cross models sit at the top of the range, with AL Sport/City trims offering the same silhouette in aluminium at a lower price.

The verdict

+Strengths
  • Exceptionally light for an e-bike thanks to the carbon frame (~17 kg with battery, ~14.2 kg without)
  • Very quiet, low-drag Shimano STEPS mid-drive with smooth, natural assistance and no harsh cut-off at 25 km/h
  • Strong real-world range from the 504 Wh battery (claimed up to 183 km Eco)
  • Clean integrated aesthetic — battery, cabling and ICS cockpit hidden — with BMC's signature build quality
  • Stable yet agile handling; Cross/Sport trims add Micro-travel rear comfort and thru-axle precision
Weaknesses
  • Very expensive (£5,600 carbon City; ~£3,150 AL Sport) — reviewers struggled to justify the price vs cheaper rivals
  • Sluggish off the mark in Eco mode, often forcing the rider into Normal to reach the cut-off speed
  • Hunched, sporty riding position with a non-adjustable ICS stem limits fit customisation
  • Largely rigid ride (only 10 mm micro-travel on some trims) is harsh on rough surfaces
  • 504 Wh battery feels modest for the price, and the charge port is awkwardly placed opposite the kickstand

Who it’s for
