Oltre RC

01

Origin

The Oltre RC is Bianchi's hyperbike flagship, launched in 2022 as the successor to the legendary Oltre XR4 that carried riders like Primoz Roglic and Jakob Fuglsang to Grand Tour and Classics wins. Developed by Bianchi's Reparto Corse race department in Treviglio, Italy, the RC abandoned the XR4's Countervail layup in exchange for raw aerodynamic gain - most visibly the patent-pending Air Deflectors, F1-inspired wings sprouting from the head tube that channel low-pressure vortices around the rider. Bianchi claims it saves 17 watts at 50 km/h vs the XR4 and 45 seconds over 40 km at 250 W. Currently raced on the UCI WorldTour by Team Arkea-B&B Hotels, the Oltre RC is the most expensive and most uncompromising Celeste-painted race bike Bianchi has ever built.

The verdict

+Strengths
  • Class-leading aerodynamics — patent-pending Air Deflectors and vented cockpit, claimed 17W saved at 50 km/h vs the Oltre XR4 (~45s over 40km at 250W)
  • Exceptional high-speed stability — composed and planted even north of 70 km/h, inspiring cornering confidence
  • Outstanding power transfer — chunky chainstays and stiff bottom bracket put every watt into forward drive, seated or sprinting
  • Race-bred handling — testers carried more corner speed than on rival aero bikes
  • RC139 Carbon Air saddle (~168g, 3D-printed) keeps an aggressive position comfortable for hours
Weaknesses
  • Punishingly stiff ride — no Countervail (unlike the Oltre Pro), so road buzz and bumps reach the rider directly
  • Heavy for the category — 6.85 kg makes it a liability on steep climbs vs lightweight all-rounders
  • Extreme price — around €15,149 for the SRAM Red AXS build causes sticker shock
  • Polarising aesthetics — aggressive, asymmetric tube shaping divides opinion
  • No mechanical-drivetrain or rim-brake option; electronic-only frame limits flexibility
