Origin

The Planet occupies Atala's mid-range MTB slot, bridging the entry Replay and the performance Waver/Snap. It earns its position with Shimano hydraulic disc brakes — a genuine upgrade over mechanical discs and a real-world benefit on descents. First introduced in the late 2000s, the Planet has gone through multiple iterations tracking Shimano's drivetrain evolution from 21 to 24-speed.

The verdict

+Strengths
  • Shimano hydraulic disc brakes (BR-M315) give confident, modulated stopping in all weather
  • Lockout fork is a genuine usability upgrade for mixed urban/trail riders
  • Shimano Acera rear derailleur shifts more crisply than Tourney/Altus found on cheaper alternatives
Weaknesses
  • Triple crankset (42/34/24) is becoming dated compared to modern 1x drivetrain standards
  • Hi-Ten fork crown construction on the HL unit adds weight versus Suntour air alternatives
  • Aluminium frame does not flex as forgivingly as carbon on longer rough-terrain rides
