Origin

The Stout was Ampler's fully-equipped city/trekking e-bike — mudguards, rack, integrated lights and an upright fit fitted from day one, while keeping the Ampler signature of looking like a normal bike thanks to a battery hidden inside the down tube and a discreet rear-hub motor. Launched around 2019 in the brand's second-generation lineup, it proved an Estonian startup (Tallinn-founded Ampler) could ship a polished daily-use product that competed with German and Dutch incumbents on finish and weighed several kilos less. Production wound down with the lineup refresh, when Ampler consolidated around the Nova / Nova Pro / Curt range under Kõu Mobility Group, so the Stout is now discontinued. A sizeable second-hand fleet still circulates across the Baltics and Northern Europe, so many URBALT listings will be Stouts.

The verdict

+Strengths
  • Looks like a normal bike — hidden battery and discreet hub motor make it inconspicuous
  • Very light for a fully-equipped e-bike (~17 kg), lively even before the motor engages
  • Quiet, smooth motor with responsive torque-sensor assistance
  • High-quality finish and components (Shimano hydraulic discs, Continental tyres, 36-spoke wheels)
  • Clean, well-regarded smartphone app for modes, range and diagnostics; comes fully kitted (lights, rack, mudguards)
Weaknesses
  • Battery is non-removable — the whole bike must be brought indoors to charge
  • 250 W / 50 Nm motor is modest and struggles on steep climbs
  • Limited low-end gearing makes hilly terrain harder
  • Real-world range drops sharply in hilly conditions (~36 km tested vs ~70 km claimed)
  • You pay a premium largely for the looks and integration rather than raw performance
