The verdict
- Best-in-class GPS accuracy thanks to multi-band GNSS — clearly outperforms Wahoo ROAM and Hammerhead Karoo 2 under tree cover and in cities
- Battery life leadership — 35 h demanding mode / 70 h battery saver, easily covers any single-day event and 3-5 day bikepacking trips
- USB-C charging — fast, modern, share cable with phone/laptop
- Touchscreen refined to near-perfect responsiveness, even with winter gloves and in rain
- Garmin Varia radar integration is the killer feature for road cyclists — shows approaching cars on screen
- Power Guide and Stamina features are unique to Garmin — no Wahoo or Hammerhead equivalent
- Massive 64 GB storage — every TopoActive region preloadable
- Mature ecosystem — Connect IQ apps, Strava, Komoot, Trailforks integrations all polished
- Physical buttons + touchscreen — best of both
- Crash detection has saved real lives — well-documented in cycling press
- Expensive — €600-750 vs Wahoo ROAM v2 €399 or Hammerhead Karoo 2 €399
- Solar premium (€150 over standard 1040) is hard to justify unless you ride ultra-endurance or bikepack regularly
- Heavy (133 g) — Wahoo ROAM v2 is 93 g, ELEMNT BOLT v2 is 68 g
- Transflective MIP screen is dull-looking vs Edge 1050 AMOLED or Karoo 2 IPS — fine in sunlight, looks dated indoors
- Setup menus still complex — Garmin's UI has 15 years of feature accretion
- No NFC payment / no speaker (added on 1050)
- Initial firmware was buggy at launch (May-July 2022) — required several updates to stabilise. Now mature.
- Maps update workflow via Garmin Express on desktop feels old-school vs Wahoo's cloud sync
