Orbea traces its roots to 1840 in Eibar, Basque Country, where the Orbea brothers (Juan Manuel, Mateo and Casimiro) ran a firearms workshop — and even then, personalization was a differentiator, with engraved initials and gold/silver detailing on commissioned revolvers. The company pivoted to bicycles in 1930 and, after a late-1960s financial crisis, was rescued in 1969 when its own workers bought it out and folded it into the Mondragón cooperative network, where it remains worker-owned to this day. The MyO ('MyOrbea') program, which took shape around 2014 and launched in 2015, is Orbea's modern expression of that 175+ years of made-to-order heritage: an online configurator that lets any customer, at no extra cost for colour or fit, hand-tailor one of Orbea's production bikes before it is painted by hand in Mallabia.
